Birds, weirdness and a mirrorless camera – Five Friday Favorites

Rounding out a week that seems to have flown by, I’m spending my Friday considering an overnight trip to Sarasota on Saturday and checking in with my favorite Friday link-ups – Oh, Hey Friday, High Five for Friday, and Friday Favorites (add’l links below).

This is actually less my favorite quote of the week and more the belief on which I tend to rely.

With the final Florida Keys posts going up on the blog – Cudjoe Key & Key West! Square Grouper (and a giveaway)! this week, I spent significant portions of my days poring through photos. The glow of the sunset on this pelican is so spectacular that the photo has quickly become one of my favorites.

Speaking of cameras… I need help.

Not psychological help (although that might be up for debate). No, expert advice type of help. Assistance. Should you consider yourself an expert (or, really, if you have any knowledge at all) on mirrorless cameras please feel free to flood my comments and inbox with suggestions.

It’s my understanding that these babies carry the perks of a DSLR but with significantly less bulk and weight. While visiting Key West I toted (hefted) around our DSLR. While I’m ecstatic about the resulting photos (more here), I was not thrilled with the logistics of hauling the camera around. I was using an old camera bag that had previously been utilized for an old-school (pre-digital) video camera. For that use, I could fit the camcorder, two extra tapes and two extra batteries around. Somehow, trying to fit in the single DSLR body and two lenses was a struggle. And heavier. Since getting the few items into the bag was sort of like Tetris, getting the camera back out again wasn’t exactly the smoothest, fastest feat. The idea of carrying an even larger bag, at the same weight (or heavier, with additional items), on my future travels to Mexico and Europe is not appealing. When I mentioned to Niki of Glossy Blonde that I was considering a mirrorless camera, she confessed she was doing the same thing. (Niki is not only my friend, but my go-to for all things blogging – and have you seen her photos? All of these are reasons I consulted her.)

I’d love to hear from someone who either currently uses solely a mirrorless (APS-C or four-thirds) or from someone who has made the switch with a DSLR, either direction. Please help!

Favorite TV Show

Quirky and off-center, The IT Crowd is one of the funniest original shows I’ve seen in ages. Admittedly, I’m (very) late to the party. The show ended its run in 2010 after four seasons. It stars Chris O’Dowd (who you recognize as the cute cop from Bridesmaids), Richard Ayoade (The Watch) and Katherine Parkinson (The Kennedys and an episode of Sherlock). It’s on Netflix and it’s hysterical. Unfortunately, I’m almost through season four. Crap. I’m going to need another show.

Favorite Song

Bird Set Free by Sia from the album This is Acting. The whole album is great, but this particular song gets the most airtime with me. You can’t help but feel motivated to get up and kick some ass. Figuratively, of course.

Right, Darcy? 99% of the time cashiers are super-nice and friendly, but sometimes I just can’t.

I love anything by Sia! Her music is so different and amazing. Your pelican photo is stunning! Sadly I don’t have any advice on the camera, but best of luck with your search!

Sia is insanely talented, not only as a singer but as a songwriter. I think the combination makes everything she does just that much more powerful.

I’m seriously thinking of going mirrorless too! I’ve looked into (and fallen in love with) the Nikon 1 J5. My DSLR is a Nikon also and I really wanted to stay a part of that family.

    Keep us posted!

I will absolutely keep you updated on the camera decision! I’m currently considering the Sony A6000. My current DSLR is a Canon, but my point and shoot is a Nikon, and I do love it. I’m not even sure I ran across the 1 J5 – I’ll have to research that! Let me know if you make the switch!

That quote is something my Mom always told me growing up! It is hard to try to let things go, but I truly believe… if its going to happen then it will happen! Have a great weekend. Stopped oveR from the linkup!

Thanks so much for stopping by! I agree, sometimes it’s hard to see the big picture. That’s usually when I need the quote the most!

Let me know your thoughts on this
